Quinta Dona Matilde is one of the oldest properties in the Douro region. Previously known as Enxodreiro, the farm was part of the first demarcation, ordered by the Marquês de Pombal in 1756, and was part of the properties authorized to produce “factory wines”, an expression synonymous with the best wines, those intended for export. Even today, the entire vineyard on the farm has the letter A, the highest classification in the region, used in the Port wine sector.
A Colheita from a single vintage (2010), this Quinta Dona Matilde Port started its aging process in large, wooden casks, - as is traditional with a Tawny - moving, one year later, to smaller containers (600-liter barrels) which allow for aging to occur in an environment with more controlled oxidation.
Bottled in 2017, again with a light filtration to allow the port to age in the bottle. The 2010 is still in its infancy stages and will continue to develop more older vintage/tawny like notes as it ages over the next 10 to 15 years. For now, it is much sweeter. The red fruit notes are forward and a slight nuttiness is starting to emerge on the back palate.
The 2013 vintage done in the same manner as the 2010. In combination with the quality of the grapes and the high quality brandy used during the vinification process, the traditional work of the Barros family wine cellar has helped to create an original Port Wine, halfway between a Ruby and a Tawny. The port shows lovely freshness and notes of red fruit as well as complex aromas with a touch of nuttiness.
Quinta Dona Matilde 2016 Vintage has intense and complex, with floral notes, namely berries such as blueberries and, at the end, spices. In the mouth it is a full-bodied wine, with strong tannins but at the same time well-rounded and elegant. Quite a long finish. Keep the bottle lying down; it can be enjoyed 2 to 3 years after the harvest date and improves with age recommended date for consumption 2030 - 2040; decant the wine before serving.
