“Quasi Centenaria” roughly translates to “about 100 years old,” a reference to this gnarly old Carignan vineyard planted right around 1919. The vines grow on two steep, rock-covered, slopes, one facing north and the other south, located in the heart of Priorat. Given the age of the vines, the lack of water, extreme heat, and absence of nutrients in the soil, these vines struggle to give 300 grams of fruit per bush – enough for about two-thirds of a bottle per vine.
The 2016 vintage has begun to develop nicely and the complexity of fruit flavors is becoming more apparent. Primary notes are still stars but the secondary notes are starting to emerge and the integration of fruit, tannins and minerality are integrating nicely.
