Vineyards are split among six individual estates; Château de Pennautier, Domaine de Garille, Château de Ciffre, Domaine de la Borie Blanche, Mas des Montagnes and Château de Caunettes.
The typical red Côtes du Roussillon wine is based on the classic Languedoc-Roussillon and southern Rhône valley grape varieties Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre, perhaps with support from their less-favored and slightly rustic cousin Carignan.
Wines from older vineyards may even include a dash of Cinsault and possibly even the little-known Lledoner Pelut (thought to be a mutation of Grenache Noir). All of these varieties are sanctioned for use in the appellation's rosé wines, along with Grenache Gris and Macabeo (Spain's Viura).
This is a blend of 55% Grenache, 35% Syrah and 10% Carignan from higher altitude vineyards at the foot of Mt. Canigou in the Pyranees in the south of France. Deep garnet in color, mostly opaque and bright. The nose has black cherries, grilled meats, black raspberries and black pepper. Medium to full bodied. On the palate, black cherries, black raspberries with slight smoke. Some depth and a nice complexity. Light tannins. Good balance. Nice finish. This is a very nice wine drinking well now and should continue to for the next five to seven years. It will work well with chili or sausages.
